A new way to measure poverty
An university study introduced a new way to measure poverty called time to dollars. Instead of asking how much a person earns, it asks how long it takes the average person to earn one international dollar, a unit created for the study that is equivalent to the U.S. dollar. Traditional measures such as GDP and average income make the U.S. appear wealthy, but they leave out one key factor: inequality. This metric includes everyone, not just workers, to show how much economic power a society generates per person, how income is spread across the population, and how evenly money is distributed. That is where the findings become troubling. Put simply, if it takes you twice as long to earn \$1 as someone else, you are effectively twice as poor, according to the study. The average American now takes 63 minutes to earn one international dollar, up from 43 minutes in the 1990s.
